Hunan-branded musical instruments resonate across the globe: ‘Bullfighter’ uses electric guitars to establish a new foothold in county-level manufacturing
Within the landscape of Hunan’s manufacturing sector, construction machinery and rail transport are widely recognised as the region’s ‘heavyweights’, whilst a humble electric guitar is quietly emerging as a ‘new voice’ for Hunan’s global expansion. According to the latest figures provided by Bullfighter Musical Instruments, the company’s monthly production capacity for electric guitars, electric basses and other products has now reached over 7,000 units. These products are exported to 60 countries and regions, establishing the firm as a shining example of Hunan’s local musical instrument manufacturing sector.
Filling the Gap: From ‘OEM and Private Labelling’ to ‘Hunan Products Going Global’
For a long time, the high-end electric guitar market has been monopolised by American and Japanese brands, leaving Hunan and indeed the central region of China with a long-standing industrial void in the musical instrument manufacturing sector. The rise of Bullfighter Musical Instruments has broken this deadlock.
“We aim not merely to produce ‘Made in Hunan’ goods, but to deliver ‘Hunan-quality’ products,” explains He Bei, founder of Bullfighter Musical Instruments. Since the factory’s establishment, the company has rejected the low-end contract manufacturing model, establishing a comprehensive product R&D and quality control system covering everything from timber selection and fret-winding techniques to pickup systems. The products have gained recognition from professional users in mainstream markets for electric and acoustic instruments, including Europe, the US, Japan, South Korea and Russia, and are gradually making an impact in Southeast Asia and the Middle East. By 2025, Bullfighter had signed agreements with numerous major musical instrument brand distributors in countries such as Europe, the US, South America , India , Russia and south-east Asian, entering overseas specialist music shops under its own ‘Bullfighter’ brand and achieving a transition from ‘selling products’ to ‘selling a brand’.
In the production workshops of Yongzhou, Hunan, workers are skilfully sanding, assembling and tuning instruments. The establishment of Bullfighter Instruments has not only filled a gap in the industry but has also stimulated local employment and the emergence of a supporting industrial chain.
Currently, the company has created over 100 local jobs, covering trades such as carpentry, spray painting, electronic assembly and quality control, with 72% of staff being local residents. At the same time, the company is collaborating with provincial timber processing and hardware manufacturing enterprises to gradually establish a localised supply chain spanning “timber – components – finished products”.
“Musical instrument manufacturing is a combination of labour-intensive and technology-intensive processes,” stated a representative from the Guitar Economic Industrial Park in Yongzhou, Hunan Province. Specialised manufacturing enterprises such as Bullfighter serve as a prime example of the “specialised, refined, distinctive and innovative” development model for county-level economies, offering new insights for Hunan in attracting the relocation of coastal manufacturing and fostering distinctive industrial clusters.
The Sound of the Future: Letting the World Hear Hunan
At the Bullfighter factory, every guitar undergoes 12 quality control checks before leaving the premises, with tone adjustments carried out by luthiers possessing over five years’ experience. This relentless pursuit of the perfect ‘feel’ and ‘tone’ is reshaping the international market’s perception of ‘Made in China’.
“Our goal is not merely to produce a guitar that meets standards, but to create one that musicians will remember.” Moving forward, the company will continue to specialise in niche markets, riding the wave of Hunan’s “Three Highs and Four News” strategy to ensure that musical instruments bearing the “Xiang” brand resonate more powerfully on the global stage.
